Grant Summary: The American Heart Association’s Simple Cooking with Heart in Native American Communities Program will provide six-weeks of culturally-competent and budget sensitive cooking demonstrations and nutrition education by engaging low-income Native American families served by the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes’ Food Distribution Program. Cooking demonstrations will teach the importance of eating healthy foods and provide participants with a hands on approach to creating heart-healthy meals at home with the produce and canned foods received from their food distribution program. Nutrition education will focus on label reading, grocery store tours, meal planning, food preservation, and more. The goal of the program is to increase the frequency of nutritious and affordable meals prepared at home and to improve overall diet quality in tribal communities.
